On Thursday January 19, 2017, at approximately 10:00 am, divers from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office located the body of Kenneth Edward McCann Jr. The recovery was made near the location Mr. McCann was last seen in the water after his fishing boat capsized on Grandin Lake early yesterday morning.
Interlachen, FL: On Wednesday January 18, 2017 at approximately 5:30 am, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies responded to Grandin Lake in Western Putnam County in reference to reports of someone calling for help. When they arrived in the area they realized the cries were coming from the waters of the lake. Deputy Aaron Holland and Sergeant Shannon Depew knocked on doors of nearby houses until they found a property owner with a boat who was willing to take them out to the person in the water. After rescuing a 33-year-old male they learned another man was still in the water as a result of their small fishing boat capsizing. The missing boater has been identified as 56 –year-old Kenneth Edward McCann Jr.
The search for Mr. McCann continued until well after sunup when it was determined there was little chance he had survived. At that time divers from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Search and Recovery Unit began recovery efforts. Divers form the Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist with the search.
The recovery efforts continued until diving was temporarily suspended at sun down. Divers from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office are expected to resume the search shortly after first light tomorrow morning. Marine Officers from The Florida Wildlife Commission will continue searching and maintain security at the scene throughout the night.
